At home today...!

During the Covid-19 school closures, we are sharing an activity each day with you, this is something that you can do at home together.  These are posted on our social media facebook page @dorkingnurseryschool and also via Parentmail. Please share photos of what you have been doing with us on Tapestry.

Lets get musical by Monika - fill up a plastic bottle, a milk gallon or a pringles tube with dry rice/pasta/lentils/dry beans. You can decorate your shaker however you like. Have fun just playing music together or you could play a game of guess this song/nursery rhyme. It might be too tricky for a 2 and 3 year old to 'shake' an actual tune, but they might be able to guess a tune played by a grown up and they surely will enjoy having a go!

Lava Lamp by Angie - Pour some vegetable oil into a tall glass, (about a third way up) & add some vinegar (you could talk about how it reacts together & makes a bubble effect in the oil) then add quite a few drops of food colouring (you can use different colours). Then in a separate glass, mix together a little water with some bicarbonate of soda and carefully pour into the oil/vinegar mix (just a little at a time) and see how it reacts, once it stops fizzing, the food colour bubbles should drop down like a lava lamp.  Side note... alka seltzer will also work instead of bicarb of soda.

Eye spy by Monika - play a finding game: take turns to hide a toy somewhere around a house (or garden) and then give your family member directions to find it (go straight, turn right, go towards the window, look under the table). If you prefer you could alter this game into: cold, warm, hot (instead of directions or in addition to them).

Dressing up by Eleanor - Dress up as your favourite character, be creative, using whatever you have at home and act out a story

Water play by Nicole - Take a bowl of water outside to play with. Add a tea set, empty containers (raid the recycling) and play outside in the warmth. Or, add these items to your bath to pour and play with. Add a drop of food colouring or bubble bath if you are outside for an extra bit of fun.

Salt dough by Kelly - 

  • Making Salt dough (not for eating)
  • Turn the oven to its lowest temperature
  • 1 cup of flour
  • Half cup salt
  • Half cup water
  • Mix together to make a big ball. Then get creating, use different tools. Place on a baking sheet.
  • Place in an oven for 3 hours until firm to touch.
  • You can then decorate your items with paint.

Water painting by Nicole - Use paint brushes or sponges to create pictures outside on the floor, on a wall or fence using just water. See how quickly the picture disappears/ evaporates. Can you take a photo of your picture to share with your key person at Nursery? Can you get someone to draw around you?

How about some target practice by Jo -  Pair up some socks, nice and tight, to use as balls and then rummage in the cupboards for various bowls, buckets. Set out the bowls and buckets on the floor in front of you. Take it in turns to throw the sock balls and count up how many you get inside a bucket.

Water play by Emma -  If you have a garden, have a bit of fun with some milk and plastic bottles cut out and stuck to a fence (I used drawing pins) and make a water wall/fall chute from plastic bottles which makes a fun afternoon of water play. And/Or indoors or outdoors water bubble play: cut out the bottom of a plastic drinks bottle (I used a small water drinks bottle) and put 1 sock (a clean sock!) over the cut end, then in a small bowl put some water and washing up liquid in it, mix it a little, try not to make too many bubbles, then dip the sock end into the water solution and then pull it out and using your mouth blow the drinking/pouring end of the bottle and you should see big bubbles come out of the sock and if you keep blowing maybe a bubble snake!!!

VE Day extravaganza from everyone

Make your own picture frame from Monika - choose a photograph and stick it onto a piece of cardboard a bit bigger then the picture. Spread glue on the cardboard around the picture and stick anything pretty you can find in your house: coloured paper, material scraps, tin foil or anything you like. You've made your own picture frame. If you have folded your cardboard in half, your frame even has a stand!

Lets get moving from Tracey - Make an obstacle course in the garden if the weather is warm. You could use flower pots and sticks to make jumps, peg a blanket across a washing line to go under, choose an obstacle to run around and make up some actions, e.g. 5 jumps on the spot or clapping up high then touching your toes.  If the weather is bad or you do not have an outside space you could do the same indoors – using a table to go under, a chair to run around, 5 jumps on the rug or doormat etc.  If this all feels a bit much you could go back to a classic game and play musical bumps or statues!

Scavenger Hunt from Steph - take it in turns to give each other a clue describing something to find, e.g. Can you find something you wear on your feet? You could even ask each other to find something beginning with a certain sound.

The seasons from Natasa - The seasons! Why not try to make a large collage pictures to illustrate the seasons. Use your child’s paintings/drawings/photographs as well as pictures from magazines, and objects like leaves collected on walks. Tell stories about the seasons e.g. ‘The park in summer’ or ‘What the squirrel does in the autumn’. Bring out the different features of each season in your stories:  Autumn- blackberries, squirrels gathering nuts, leaves falling, fog, bonfire ...  Winter- animals going into hibernation, frost, snow, bare twigs, long nights, Christmas, warm clothes, ...  Spring- lambs, crocuses, daffodils, leaves on the trees, Easter eggs, umbrellas for showers (all seasons really), butterflies, life cycle of a frog ...  Summer- long days, bees, flowers, sun protection, paddling pools, holidays (before after lockdown) ...

More dens from Caroline - Using some blankets/sheets, clothes pegs and a couple of chairs make a den. This den can then be many things maybe a house, a dinosaur cave, a castle. It can be a great place for a picnic lunch either indoors or in the garden! Add some cushions and have a snooze!

Sofa puppet show from Sophie - How about a puppet show! Set up behind the sofa with your favourite toys and do a show for the family. You could sell tickets and make it a real event. May be Mum or Dad could make one up for for you to watch in return.

Measuring from Joanna - Let’s have some fun measuring! You do not need a tape measure, any easily held household object will do. I would suggest a wooden spoon to start with. First see how many objects you can find that are the same size as the wooden spoon, then how many are bigger and how many are smaller. Then set a challenge to measure and record the length or height of suggested objects using a simple tally system, one mark for each spoon to measure the height of the table or the length of a bed. Simple drawings of each item could be used, this game would transfer well to the garden too. Once confident with the counting and measuring, you could mark halfway down the spoon to add ‘half’ as a measurement option.

Junk modelling from Sue - Practice joining things together by junk modelling. Search through your cupboards, find some boxes, tubes, card, paper etc., What could you build and create by joining things together. Use sellotape, masking tape, insulation tape, glue, treasury tags, string, ribbon.... Let’s see your robots, monsters, spaceships, garages, whatever you can produce – the list is endless!

Shadows from Michelle and Nicole - Get your child to select some toys, such as dinosaurs, animals, Lego and small dolls, anything that causes a shadow that can been easily drawn around by the child. Go outside and place them on the ground, place a piece of paper behind the toy, so that the shadow appears on the paper. Draw around the shadow shape. You could even draw around each others shadows!  Return later and see how shadow has moved and changed the shape of the toy.

Drawing to music from Eleanor - Drawing to music. Getting big paper, cardboard any scraps and anything to make marks with. Then putting on music and letting the children explore the music through the marks they make. If they have space outside, water painting. These creations can then be sent/emailed/photo taken and emailed to local Care homes (they can find the addresses online) to cheer up those that can't get out at all.

Disco from Sophie - Have a living room disco. Each family member could choose their favourite tune. Maybe have a dance off, or play freeze! Get the whole family involved and have fun making up dance routines together. Let off some steam!!

Easter printing from Sue - Cut up the inside of a kitchen roll into smaller tubes and decorate with yellow paper or paint if you have it, add orange paper for a beak and eyes for a chick. Use white or grey paper/paint for rabbits, adding long ears, a tail and whiskers etc. Use your chicks and rabbits to play Sleeping Bunnies, tell stories or create a race game by drawing out a track with squares, use a dice, counting and jump/hop your characters forward. Everyone can join in; the winner gets a prize! Any carrots in the fridge? Have fun!

Easter eggs from Eleanor - Make lots of egg shapes and decorate them in different ways, using whatever you have to hand, for example soil, flowers, rub grass on the paper. Or if you have art materials you can use those. Then hang them up in your window to wish others a Happy Easter

Flowers from Kelly - Look outside your window or go for a walk ,what flowers can you see, design a vase/basket full of colourful flowers for spring think about the different shapes in each flower and the length of your stems -you could use chalk pencils pens art materials for your creations!

Easter seeds from Joanna - Creating new life! Find your own seeds to plant, no need to buy any. Collect the seeds from either tomatoes, peppers or chillies (if you are brave enough!) Spread the seeds onto a sheet of kitchen roll and leave to dry, then plant the kitchen paper complete with seeds in a little soil or compost, water a little daily, avoid putting them outside until there is no risk of frost. I’ve grown tomatoes and mini peppers this way, good luck!

Another idea for those with no access to a garden is to create your own reading book, collect the packaging from your foods and homeware items eg baked beans, biscuits or even toilet rolls or nappies, supermarket carrier bags also work, then cut them out and stick them on to paper. Fix the paper sheets together using a stapler or use a hole punch and string. Then see how many your child can recognise or find the matching one still in a cupboard. Happy hunting!

Egg decorations from Caroline - Cut out egg shapes in card or paper. These can be decorated with pens, crayons, paint or collage items. Make a hole in the top of each egg and string them together to make Easter bunting.

Easter baking from Steph - Have a go at baking some Easter themed biscuits, cupcakes or chocolate nest cakes at home.  Easter chocolate nest cakes recipe: https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/eastereggnests_93841

Easter - make your own puzzles from Anne - Find a picture/photo/old calendar picture/wrapping paper/ birthday card/Easter card/.....stick it to a piece of card or thicker paper.....either cover it with sticky back plastic......or even just a thin layer of PVA glue (leave it to dry!).....or just leave it as paper (but it won’t last long!) then cut it up (pinking shears work well - if you have them) and you have make your own puzzle!!  Get creative and start with big pieces and then do the puzzle....and then cut the pieces smaller....or stick a contrasting picture on the back (do that before you do the initial cutting!)  Good for grown-ups too! You can make a really hard puzzle by cutting the pieces small!!

Easter Kim's game from Jo - Play the ‘tray game’. Collect a selection of interesting objects from around the home, e.g. a kitchen whisk, a Lego figure, or when outside on your daily walk, e.g. a pinecone, a leaf. Arrange them on a tray. Talk about each one...’what colour is it?’, ‘is it smooth or rough?’, ‘is it heavy or light?’. Cover up the tray with a tea towel and remove one item without it being seen by the other players. Uncover the tray and ask which object is missing. You could make up an Easter themed tray with Easter chicks and bunnies, chocolate eggs and egg cups etc...and because it is Easter, you could share the chocolate eggs at the end as a prize!

Easter rainbows from Natasa - Staying with the rainbow theme – cut out 10 egg like shapes, different sizes, from smallest to the largest (like the Russian dolls). We can write numbers on them and decorate them in the colours of the rainbow (there are 7 different colours, so some might need to be repeated), or each can be the full rainbow egg, or half and half in different colours – it's all up to you and your fabulous creative ideas. This can also be the collage activity with different resources you might find at home. Hide them around the house/garden and go for another ‘Rainbow hunt’. Later, they can be joined up with some string into the ‘Easter number line’ bunting to brighten up your rooms. If you have enough of ‘egg shapes’, let’s try to cut some ‘carrot shapes’ instead.

Voice sounds from Kelly - Voice sounds- distinguish between the differences in vocal sounds, explore different mouth movements. Blowing, sucking, tongue stretching and wiggling. Practice these moves to music, make your voice go down a slide-weee, make your voice bounce like a ball-boing, boing! Hiss like a snake-sssss, keep everyone quiet-Shshshsh. Gently moo like a cow-mmooo.

Make a trumpet-from a simple cone of paper, experiment by making different noises through cones- honk fog horn, peep peep of a bird, up and down wail of a siren.

Small world stories from Caroline - Use a random collection of small word figures or other items and make up a story involving each of the items. You can just talk and elaborate the story, enact the story with the items or use a large piece of paper to draw the story may be adding a train track /river or scenery to your piece of paper.

Make a den from Sophie - Make a den out of chairs, blankets etc...have a picnic and share a book while you are there!

Animal noises from Jo - Find pictures of different animals (from books, calendars, photos). Lay them on the floor in a circle and take it in turns to ‘spin a bottle’ (or you could throw a bean bag onto a picture). Pretend to be the animal the bottle lands on, thinking about size, height, movement and sound. You could extend this by talking about the animal...what colour? what does it eat? Does it live in the water or on land? Could you keep it as a pet?

Sound effects from Steph - Choose a book and add sound effects for anything that happens, e.g. footsteps or car sounds. You could even have a go at acting the story out as a family!

Make a collection of items that make a noise at home, e.g. keys, coins in a pot, rattle or squeaky toy and put these into a bag or box. Take turns in choosing one of the items to make a sound for other family members to guess.

Junkyard band from Tracey  - Use household items such as bowls, pans, spoons, whisks, boxes etc. and sing songs or Nursery rhymes as you play. You could also listen to favourite songs. While you are playing try to keep a steady beat in time with the music or words.

Skype playdate from Anne - Skype playdate! Putting on Skype (or Face Time or Whatsapp etc) on a big screen if you have one, connect with another family from Nursery, and having it on as children play and can engage with their friends in another house.

Rainbow Hunt from Natasa - look for the items/objects around the house that are matching any colour of the rainbow. See how many each member can find/point at, possibly make a tally chart and record each object found or simply look for eg. 5 blue things, 10 yellow etc. To extend we can look for 3 round yellow things etc. Before or after the activity possibly draw, paint or create a rainbow with any resources available. To continue let’s talk about rainbows: Where do they come from? And even create your own rainbow story!

Finger puppets from Sue - Encourage your child to draw favourite characters from stories, tv shows etc. Stick to stiff paper or cardboard then cut out, also cut two holes near the base, large enough for fingers to fit through. Now the character can walk! Make others and put on a show, tell a new or familiar story, let their imagination flow …. dinosaurs, pirates, Peppa pig, the Gruffalo etc. etc.

Hunt the thimble from Joanna - Based on the age old ‘Hunt the Thimble’. Play a game of hunt the spoons, (this could of course be cars or any small toys that you have several of). Let's start with 5 of them, have a simple tally chart so that they can make a mark when they have found each of them. You could give clues using positional language, as well as letting them know when they are close by using the words red or green, or hot or cold. Obviously make a mental note where you’ve hidden them or you might find yourself without spoons. Once familiar swap and let the children hide the spoons.
